Add or change loss date on a claim

You can add or change the loss date on a claim when a claim’s status is New.

Claims can exist without a loss date entered in BriteClaims. There are instances when the exact loss date is unknown without further investigation. BriteClaims is designed to allow users to create an FNOL and submit a claim without a loss date. See Step 1 – Policy Search.

The status of a claim without a loss date can’t be changed from New to Open until a loss date is added to the claim.

Note: To manage a claim, the claim’s status must be Open. To proceed with managing a claim, a loss date must be added to the claim.

If the loss date on a claim isn’t correct, then you can still change the loss date if the claim’s status is New.

To add or change a loss date on a claim:

  1. On the Claims Home screen, select the claim that you want to add the loss date to.
  2. On the claim file’s Details screen, navigate to Loss Information and select Edit.
  3. In the Loss Information dialog box, in the Loss Date box, use the date picker to select the loss date or type the loss date. If you add a loss date that’s after the date the FNOL record was created, the following message will appear:

Please enter a Loss Date that is on the same day or before the date the FNOL was initially created.

  4. In the Loss Time box, use the time picker to select the time of loss or type the time of loss. If you add a loss time that is after the date and time the FNOL record was initially created, the following message will appear:

Please enter a Time that is before the Date/Time the FNOL was initially created.

  5. In the Timezone box, select the timezone associated with where the loss occurred.
  6. Select Save. When you select Save the following message will appear:

Changing the Loss Date can impact the policy revision attached to the claim and may require a policy data refresh. Would you like to see if there is a new policy revision available? If you click “Yes” you will be directed to the Policy Modal.

Usage considerations

  • If there is no policy associated with the claim at the time you add a loss date and loss time, then you can change the loss date and loss time to any date before the date and time the FNOL was initially created.
  • If a policy is associated with the claim at the time you add the loss date and loss time, then you can only add the loss date and loss time that fall within the policy’s effective date range that is before the date and time the FNOL was initially created. If you add a date that is outside of the policy’s effective date range, the following message will appear:

This date falls outside the policy term. Please select a date within the policy term, or close this claim and open a new claim.

  • You can only change the loss date and loss time when a claim’s status is New.
